Emilia's Swan Lake Nursery

When we first found out we were having a girl, I couldn't wait to start working on designing the nursery. The first thing my husband Kevin said was we are not painting the room pink!! My response was of course not, it never even crossed my mind, but filling the room with as much pink as possible did!!
I wanted to create an elegant and timeless space that Emilia could grow into, and create a space that  wouldn't have to change as she gets older.

I've always loved Persian style, and growing up taking ballet as a child, I knew I wanted to incorporate that into the room design. Soft pastels are my favourite colour pallet to work with and having that soft ballet blush tones is the main inspiration for the nursery. We went more neutral with the walls, that way if the room ever changes we won't have to re-paint. I wanted to have fun with incorporating swans into the design but I did not want it to scream a swan theme. Number 1 rule of design, always go with a concept and never a theme. But this is also a little girls room so we had to have a few swan elements in the room such as textiles, art, bookshelf and mobile, these are all decor items that can be easily switched out. At the time when I started working on the nursery I was having a hard time sourcing decor item with swans on them, so this room didn't happen over night. A lot of items I ended up making or were just lucky Winners and Homesense finds. Now swan nursery decor is so trendy making it is easier to find some cute items that would go perfectly in your little swan princesses room!

I just simply adore this crib and bed canopy, so keeping with our Ballet concept idea the one thing I think of when imaging ballet is blush and lots of pretty blush tulle. The crown is absolutely gorgeous with the gilded gold finish and the way the tulle drapes flow so elegantly around the crib. The crib skirt is also tulle with a little petal flower elegantly placed all around the skirt. If this crib skirt was a dress or a skirt you bit it would be in my closet for sure!

Most of the furniture in this space was pieces we already owned, the only item we purchased was the crib. I knew I wanted something that had tufted sides and in a French provincial style.
This room at one time was our guest room so I decided to leave the double bed. having the bed in the nursery is a bonus it came in handy if I needed to sleep in there with Emilia and also provided a comfortable place to nurse. Placing the bed in front of the window only made sense because our windows are original to the house and are drafty making it too cold to have the crib there. Plus, this gave us so much more space in the room to move around and provided a nice area for Emilia to play.

We did not have space for a separate changing table so we made use of the dresser that was currently in the space. This was one from when I was a kid and because it was finished in a grey colour it is neutral enough and still works well within the space. This is where we store all of her bedding and clothes that fits her right now. The diaper cart is so handy and we keep everything she needs from diapers, wipes, creams, lotions and blankets.

The Bookshelf is one of my favourite elements in the room. I made the base of the shelf using plain pine wood from the hardware store. Then I printed a swan silhouette I found one line of and traced it onto a thin piece of wood. Next we cut it out using a jig saw glued everything together and painted. It is the perfect place to display all of her prettiest children's books.

I love how this space turned out it is so beautiful and elegant and will be able to grow with her as she gets older without too much work to change.
